  45. I was talking to a dealer yesterday and he told me (here in Toronto) that now is
  46. the time to buy Atari stock.  It is at its lowest and should be going up in the
  47. near future.  Anyone here own Atari stocks?  I am interested in buying a few
  48. shares (I don't have much cash) and want to know the prices roughly?  Also,
  49. considering I live in Toronto Canada, how would I go about doing this?

  73. Atari stock is traded on the American Stock Exchange (AMEX). Friday's
  74. close was 2-7/8 (two and seven-eighths U.S. dollars per share). If you're
  75. interested in investing, talk to a Canadian stockbroker. You should know
  76. that there may be a minimum trade (perhaps in the hundreds of dollars)
  77. and you should expect to pay commissions.

  90. released a program which reverses the left and right mouse buttons
  91. so left-handed people can use a mouse left-handed.  But, the programmers,
  92. who must be right-handed, neglected to reverse the ARROW POINTER!  It
  93. still points up and to the left.  If you're left-handed, it has to point
  94. up and to the right.  Why can't society society recognize the
  95. special needs of levographic humans?

  129. net address; please "follow back" the routing this message took to

  132.         Apparently I overwhelmed the email capacity of my signon on
  133. the Well at 256K bytes while in Germany; many messages bounced, all of those
  134. during March. I apologize; I was on vacation, and did not know the Well
  135. imposed Email limits. (It's just as well; you pay for space above a certain
  136. amount).
  137.  
  138.         While I'm making an attempt to support users here, it's difficult;
  139. many messages "bounce" when I try to reply, and I haven't the foggiest notion
  140. why. ("unknown system ID? hunh?") I put most of the effort into supporting
  141. questions on comp.sys.atari.st simply because about 50% of my email replies
  142. bounce back to me and never reach their destination, whereas atari.st makes
  143. it there.
  144.  
  145.         During times of heavy software development or colicky children I'll
  146. periodically "miss" here; it'll happen. I apologize in advance, but I'll try.
  147. For instance, it's currently 2 AM here, and I'm due to visit my mother in law
  148. tomorrow.. *gack*..

  150.         In response to the 1.44 mbyte question, I have no idea how a 1.44 meg
  151. drive could work; we have no, zero, zip software support in it in Spectre
  152. 3.0.
  153. Perhaps Apple installs a device driver for Apple File Exchange? You got me.
  154. The step rate can be altered if you go after Spectre with something like
  155. MacsBug or TMon, which are becoming available in Spectre compatible
  156. versions. In the meantime, until Atari or someone sets a high density
  157. standard, we don't know what to do -- support 78 different boards and
  158. controllers? Support thr few 1772's that work at high speed? I don't know.
  159. We did reserve shift F1 and shift F2 for mounting high density, but that's
  160. it; there is -no- code "hooked in" to those keys right now.
  161.  
  162.         In response to the 68030 question, the 68030 SST is coming along quite
  163. nicely. We're doing final tuning of the "George Memory Unit" controller,
  164. software compatibility testing, and entering Beta testing phase. We've toyed
  165. with 50 Mhz, but the overall system gives better throughput at 33 Mhz due to
  166. burst mode being available at that speed, so we'll probably "top end" right
  167. now
  168. at 33.
  169.  The performance is still quite interesting; I'll post some Q-Index
  170. benchmarks
  171. (or dhrystones, whatever ...) as soon as we get the boards "cast in concrete"
  172. to
  173. what people will be getting. That should occur within this week; we wanted
  174. to test at 50 Mhz due to many requests at CeBIT.
  175.

  209. 1.2 gig drive.  I would like to hook it up to my ST and
  210. use it for MAC via my GCR.  I figure i can hang it off
  211. my thru port on my Quantum/Supra host set up.

  213. I was reading in the 3.0 update manual that Spectre's formatter
  214. maxes out at 256 megs.  Does this mean i have to get the drive
  215. preformatted for MAC?  also.. will i have any trouble hanging it
  216. off my Quantum/Supra etc etc..

  245. Just FYI, in the March 1991 issue of ST Informer there is an article on
  246. how to connect a 1.2gig drive to the ST.  I did not read it in detail, but
  247. the guy did succeed.  You may wish to order this issue to check it out.

  270. yes. i wrote one recently. it is very simple. just swap bytes in all
  271. word/long values. i thought i might have posted it with manpager, but
  272. maybe not. if you can't write your own, mail me and i'll post it. now
  273. that i think of it (since i don't have GDOS), i wrote it the other way
  274. 'round (GDOS .fnt -> GEM .fed). still, the transform is symmetrical in
  275. that applying it twice gives the original file. GDOS uses (goofy) intel
  276. byte order...

  294. I am in need of help with MiNT and MGR.  I know that they will work on
  295. my system configuration meets the minimum requirements - I have a 520ST with
  296. 2.5 meg and a 30 meg hard drive. I down-loaded the two of them from GENIE,
  297. (which, by the way took forever even at 2400 baud),  and am having trouble
  298. getting MiNT/MGR to operate correctly.

  300. Okay, here's the root of the problem... I can get both MiNT and MGR to
  301. start, but each time I try to open a window in MGR I get this "Cannot
  302. get pty"  -  quite frankly I have no idea what this means and have no
  303. way of finding out.  The documentation that came with the two sucks and does
  304. not offer any real information.   Heres my second problem; I cannot figure
  305. out way the commands that tell MGR/MiNT where to find its own programs to
  306. work, Ex: "make mgr INSROOT=<directory info> TARGET=<directory info> install"
  307.  
  308. What I am looking for are clear, simple instructions for setting up and
  309. using MiNT and MGR on an Atari, because I couldn't get what I needed from
  310. the existing docs (thought they were cryptic).
  311.

  348. I read something in one of the Amiga newsgroups that the ROMs are available
  349. from Apple's Pacific distributor in Hong Kong for $25 (no typo).  Also,
  350. Toad Computers has them, but they are a bit expensive.  I don't have their
  351. number available, nor do I have any other info about Apple's distributor,
  352. unfortunately.

  370. I've uploaded Midiplay 0.2 to atari/new on atari.archive.  It is a Midi
  371. File Format player (*.mid files) which will play formats 0 & 1.  It
  372. doesn't have any frills, but it seems to work.  It is written in Sozobon
  373. C and comes complete with source.  I am wanting people to use/test the
  374. program and the send suggestions back to me so I can make improvements.
  375. The program is FREEWARE and I don't mind if you use the code in your own
  376. proggies (effectively PD).

  378. Sample midi files can be found on ucsd.edu.  At the moment I'm a little
  379. short of test MFF files myself (having only the ones on ucsd) so can
  380. anybody rectify this situation?

  472. I have the same problem with QuickST 2.2 and MicroEmacs (3.9 I believe, maybe
  473.  3.10)

  475. It appears to be QuickST problem as I've seen it happen on some STuff as
  476. well (of course, maybe the other STuff was just written wrong).

  520. Trouble is, I can't get Zmodem to work in multi-tasking mode when using
  521. RUFUS as a desk accessory.  X/Y is slightly slower, but when you can do
  522. other work while the download is taking place, who cares!

  574.         I am new to the net and notice a fair amount of discussion about gcc.
  575. I am a recreational c programmer, and use mostly mark williams c.  Things I
  576. like about it are the integrated cli, a fairly fast emacs editor, and
  577. relatively small code.  It isn't ansi, its not public domain, and there isn't
  578. likely to ever be an mwc c++.  It also has a pretty good source level debugger.
  579. It assembly language format is weird tho.
  580.         I would be interested in hearing from users of gcc about what they like
  581. and what they don't.         If people think this is appropriate for the whole
  582. net, fine; if not e-mail me and I will post a summary.
